Dear Dr. M and Liz,
I have to take art and my teacher is really mean. He hates me!!! He won't help me and he embarrasses me. He says my drawings are bad.

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Lucy,
Teachers are supposed to offer ideas and encouragement, not mean comments. If you can, tell your art teacher that his reaction to your drawings is not helping you to become a better artist, but instead is just embarrassing you. Tell him you'd be happy to get constructive criticism from him. If it's too hard to face your teacher in person, write a note to him, saying the same thing.

Liz's Answer
Dear Lucy,
Your teacher does sound mean. There's no reason for him to act that way. Tell him that you really want to get better, but you don't know what to do. If you show an interest, he might be more inclined to help you. If that doesn't work, just tell him that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. After all, most great artists weren't appreciated in their own time.
