Dear Dr. M,
My friends and I have a singing group. It was going well until one of the girls stopped coming over to practice, and she’s missing a lot of practice time. Should we stop the group for good or not let her in it?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Valerie,
Find out why this girl is missing practice. She might have a really good excuse and still want to be part of the group. But if you find out that this girl is just not as interested in the singing group as the rest of you, you might want to continue your group without her. Just be sure to let her know why you decided to do that.

Liz's Answer
Dear Valerie,
You should talk to the girl who stopped coming to practice and find out why she isn’t coming anymore. It isn’t fair to the rest of the group to stop the group just because this one girl isn’t coming to practice, but if the girl had a good reason for not coming you shouldn’t kick her out. A good compromise might be to tell the girl that if she still wants to be part of the group, she needs to come to more of the practices and learn what she missed on her own time from someone in the group.
