Dear Dr. M,
I just moved and I'm kind of shy, so how do I make friends?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Jesica,
It's tough moving at your age and leaving behind friends you feel comfortable with. To make new friends, start small. Maybe say "hi" to the person who's sitting next to you in class. Or ask someone a question about homework. You could also try going to an after-school activity that looks like fun since you know you'll meet others who share that interest. When you act friendly and smile, others will want to be around you. Your new classmates are probably curious about you, so be open when they start the conversation.

Liz's Answer
Dear Jesica,
Since you just moved and no one at your new school knows you, it might be easier to be more outgoing than you usually would be. You have nothing to lose, so gather up all your courage and go over to someone who looks friendly and introduce yourself. You can ask that person about your teacher or the other kids in your class to break the ice. Good luck!
