Dear Dr. M and Liz,
I have two best friends. One of them is in my class. One is in another class. They know each other. They were friends…once. They hate each other! I want to be friends with both of them. Can you help?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Kellie,
You definitely don't have to choose between two friends when you like both of them. But if they hate each other, it's probably best for you to spend time with each one separately. You might also want to do a little investigating to find out why their friendship changed. If there was some kind of small misunderstanding, maybe you can help bring them closer together again. But if you can't repair the friendship, don't worry about it—these two girls really need to decide what they want.

Liz's Answer
Dear Kellie,
Talk to each of your friends privately to find out why they no longer get along. Since they were friends once, the problem is probably not a personality clash. Instead, they may have had a disagreement, which you might be able to mediate—helping them to work out their differences.
