Dear Dr. M and Liz,
My friend Kim is really down because her mom just found out that she has cancer. I had her over to my house to make her feel better, but I don't think it helped that much. I don't know what else to do to make her feel better. What should I do?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Tessa,
What a caring friend you are! Kim will help you figure out how you can best help her. Some kids want to talk about their feelings when they're worried, but others prefer to do something fun so they won't have to think about a mom's illness. Try to figure out what works best for Kim, and it's okay to ask her if you need to.

Liz's Answer
Dear Tessa,
I'm sure Kim appreciates that you're trying to cheer her up, but she's also very sad about her mom and probably can't show her appreciation right now. Make sure Kim knows that she's welcome to spend time at your house anytime she needs to talk or even just to be distracted from what's happening at her house.
