Dear Dr. M and Molly,
I am nine and I still sleep with a blankie. My 4 year old sis teases me and she is 5 years younger. I don't know how to stop. Help!

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Blankie Girl,
You should know that you're not the only 9-year-old to sleep with a "blankie" or something else that serves the same purpose. Lots of kids your age and older use something like that. The blanket makes you feel comfortable and safe, so it's easier for you to fall asleep. If you just use your blanket at night, that's okay. When you're really ready to get rid of it, you will. You might try sleeping without it on a night when you're so tired you know you'll fall asleep right away. That will show you that you can sleep without it. To avoid being embarrassed by your "blankie," don't use it while you're watching TV, carry it around with you, or take it to sleepovers.

Liz's Answer
Dear Blankie Girl,
Lots of kids sleep with a special blanket or stuffed animal. I know some kids my age who still do. There is nothing to be ashamed of. You will probably grow out of it soon. Just try to let your sister's comments go in one ear and out the other. You can tell her that it doesn't bother you because there is nothing wrong with sleeping with a blanket. If you think it would be better to sleep without your blanket then you can try to stop. See if it works.
