Dear Dr. M and Molly,
I might go to Texas to see my aunt and uncle. By plane! I'm afraid of heights. What should I do?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Kaitlyn,
What a great opportunity you have to fly to another state—that's the thing to try to keep in mind while you're on the plane. Also, remind yourself how safe flying is. If you're traveling alone, tell the flight attendant about your fear when you get on the plane, so she can help to reassure you during the ride. Also, bring lots of stuff to do on the plane—you can listen to music, read a book, write a letter to a friend, and eat a snack. If you can, take an aisle seat, which will make it more difficult for you to see out the window. If you begin to feel nervous while you're on the plane, close your eyes, slow your breathing, and imagine a very peaceful scene. You'll find that the more you fly, the less nervous you will be. You might even want to look out the window to see the incredible scenery below.

Liz's Answer
Dear Kaitlyn,
Planes can be really fun. It may seem scary going so high up in the air, but it really doesn't feel bad. You can see beautiful views if you choose, but if that's too much for you, you can always close the window shade. Take off and landing are the only parts of the trip that feel like you're moving, and the rest you'll feel like you're on regular ground. You can do lots of things on a plane that help time pass, like sleeping, listening to music, playing cards, and sometimes they have a movie playing. The ride will be over before you know it. Good luck.
