Dear Dr. M and Molly,
I'm going into middle school soon and I don't know what to expect! I feel scared and excited at the same time. I just want to know what I'm going to have to deal with. Thank you for your time.

Dear Kaelyn,
Most kids who are about to start middle school feel the same way you do. They're excited about meeting new people, gaining more independence and getting involved in fun activities. At the same time, they wonder whether they'll be able to keep up with the homework and be accepted by their new classmates. To help kids feel more excited and less scared, I wrote a book called Too Old for This, Too Young for That! Your Survival Guide for the Middle-School Years. One girl I interviewed for that book said: "Your teachers expect much more from you now than they did in elementary school. But most of them are willing to help if you're willing to approach them." Remember, you're not in this adventure alone. Besides teachers, seek out recent graduates who have the inside scoop on everything from where the bathrooms are to how to join clubs.

Liz's Answer
Dear Kaelyn,
Middle school was a great experience for me. There is more work so you need to be focused. If you are moving into a new school it may take a little while to learn your way around the building. You have more independence and you meet new people. You should be excited but it is okay to be a little nervous, too. Good luck!
