Dear Dr. M and Molly,
My parents just told me my grandpa has cancer. Should I cry and be all emotional or should I try and keep cool and keep it bottled up inside me?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear April,
If you feel like crying, go ahead and do that, but if you don't feel very emotional right now, that's OK, too. Being sad when someone you care about has a serious illness is normal, but that doesn't mean you have to be sad all the time. Try not to feel guilty when you're hanging out with your friends or doing other fun activities. But spend time with your grandfather, too. Ask him what he'd like to talk about or do. You might play a board game or watch a funny television show together. If your grandfather is going to get treatment for the cancer, you might want to find out more about it from your parents so you can be prepared.

Liz's Answer
Dear April,
It is OK to cry. If hearing this news makes you sad you should let it out. The worst thing to do is keep it inside because then it will make you more upset. Don't be afraid to cry. Your parents will understand why you are crying. Maybe you can visit your grandpa more and this will help. You don't need to hold back.
