Dear Dr. M,
I have a problem. I got into a great school and will be leaving my school to go there for my 8th grade year. I have been at my old school since kindergarten and I'm sad about leaving, but my parents really want me to go. At my old school, we were so nice to all the new kids. We'd wait for them to get lunch and we would help them and talk to them. I don't know if it's going be that way at the new school. I love to talk and usually I make new friends easily but this feels different. I keep looking stuff up on how to make new friends but I'm still scared I'll have to always eat lunch alone. Can you please help?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Brianna,
It is scary to start going to a new school and making new friends. But, as you say, you love to talk and usually make new friends easily. History should repeat itself at your new school. Whatever you were doing before—being friendly and helpful—continue at your new school. But be patient—close friendships take some time to develop. And don't say too much to your new classmates about how much you hated leaving your old friends behind.

Also, keep in mind that you'll now have the added benefit of going to a great school, which will give you lots of exciting opportunities. And remember that you don't have to give up your old friends—you'll just have to find ways to see them after school and on weekends.
