Dear Dr. M and Liz,
My dream is to be on the Olympic team for gymnastics. People see me do stunts and ask me if I am going to the Olympics. My dad tells them I started too late and I'll never be able to make it. He puts me down, and he has said it so many times that I am scared to tell him it is my dream, but I want his support. What should I do?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Erica,
It's not right that your dad puts you down, but he may not realize how he's hurting you with his comments. He may be afraid that you'll be broken-hearted if you continue to dream of the Olympics and that dream doesn't come true. Tell him that you understand how hard it is to be on an Olympic team, and that you do know that it might never happen. But you want his support as you continue to work toward that goal. At some point, you may need to let go of that dream, but right now you'd like to keep that dream alive. It could become a reality.

Liz's Answer
Dear Erica,
When you and your dad are alone, you should tell him that you really want to be on the Olympic team one day and that if you work really hard and he helps you, it might happen even though you started late. Explain to him how much you want to be in the Olympics for gymnastics and show him that you are responsible. The sooner you tell your dad how you feel, the sooner you'll be able to work on making your dream come true.
