Dear Dr. M and Liz,
My mom was divorced from my dad for almost all my life, and she won't even let me see him, but that's not the problem. My mom got together with another guy, and they have been together since I was five. They say they're going to get married sometime this year, but I don't want them to get married. He says it's so he could protect us with insurance, but I really don't care about that. Please help me. I'm desperate. Also, he hit me a couple of times too. Please help me again.

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Addie,
You need to have a long conversation with your mom, not just about the guy your mom's going to marry, but also about your dad and why she won't let you see him. Tell her you need to understand her reasons for remarrying—insurance is probably not the only explanation—and for keeping you away from your father. You may be having a hard time dealing with the idea of a boyfriend becoming your stepdad because it represents a more permanent situation. You may feel that your relationship with your mom will change. Also, if your mother wasn't around when her boyfriend hit you, tell her about those incidents.

Liz's Answer
Dear Addie,
Talk to your mom about how you feel. It's really important that you tell her that her boyfriend hits you sometimes and explain the other reasons you don't want her to get married.
