Dear Dr. M and Liz,
My grandma lives in Texas. I stay up all night worrying about her. She might get hit by a hurricane. She's really cool and is only 58 years old. Now I get in trouble at school because I'm falling asleep in class.

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Amelia,
Keeping your worries to yourself might be preventing you from sleeping, so find an adult you can talk to about your fear, maybe a parent or an aunt. Also, talk to your teacher about why you're so sleepy in class. She probably would want to know that you're not staying up late sending instant messages to your friends or watching TV. Find out whether your grandmother knows what to do in case a hurricane threatens her town. If you know she's ready to take action, you won't have to spend as much time worrying about her.

Liz's Answer
Dear Amelia,
You should talk to your mom about your worrying. She might know more about hurricanes than you do and could share that information with you, or you could find out more at the library or online. Once you know more about hurricanes, you probably won't be as scared of them. You could also call your grandma to talk to her about your fears. She might have a plan for what to do in case of a hurricane, but if not you can help her make one using the information you learned with your mom.
