Dear Dr. M,
I’m getting my own room, but the thing is that I have a twin sister and we’ve shared a room since we were babies and I’m afraid I won’t be able to sleep without her in the room.

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Megan,
It’s always hard getting used to change. Think of some new ways to fall asleep—listen to soothing music or read a book (not one that’s filled with action) before you go to bed, or spend a little time talking quietly to your sister in her new room or yours before going to bed in your own room. In time, you’ll get used to falling asleep without your sister next to you. And try to focus on all the advantages you’ll have with a room you can arrange and decorate just the way you’d like.

Liz's Answer
Dear Megan,
If you find that when you get your own room you have trouble sleeping because you’re used to having your twin sister in the room with you, try closing your eyes and thinking about your sister asleep in her own bed. You could also try to imagine her being in your room.
