Dear Dr. M,
My sister is turning five soon. I have no idea what she wants and every time I ask her she only gives me one idea so then she knows what I'm giving her.

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Carmen,
Most five-year-olds want more than one thing. Instead of asking your sister what she wants, watch what she does. Get her a gift that's related to one of her favorite activities. If she loves to draw, for example, get her a jumbo box of new crayons or colored pencils. If she enjoys playing ball, get her a new one that's different from those she already has.

Liz's Answer
Dear Carmen,
If there is one thing that your sister really wants for her birthday, get it for her. But if you still want to surprise her, drop hints that you're getting something different for her. Then she'll be really surprised and excited when she opens her real present.
