Dear Dr. M and Liz,
My father just got remarried, and I just got back. They fight all the time. My two little brothers live with them and I am afraid they will get hurt. I live with my mother and stepfather. They barely even fight. What should I do?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Sarah,
Every couple has a different way of arguing. Some disagree loudly, while others discuss their differences quietly or not at all. It is possible that your father and stepmother just have a style of arguing that you're not comfortable with because you're not used to it. However, if you're concerned about your brothers being physically or emotionally hurt, then you should take action. Talk to your dad about what you've noticed. Let him know that you're afraid of what will happen to your brothers. If you have trouble talking to your dad, be sure to discuss your concerns with your mom. She can then have a conversation with your dad about those fights. He might not realize the impact they're having on you and your brothers.

Liz's Answer
Dear Sarah,
Explain to your mom what you think is going on at your dad's house. Ask her to let your dad know that you're worried that the fighting will affect your little brothers. Perhaps she can tell him that he and your stepmother should keep their fights away from your brothers. And tell your little brothers that they should call you or your mom right away if the situation at their house gets ugly.
