Dear Dr. M and Molly,
What if I get my period someplace I don't have a pad? My mom says I don't need to carry them yet, because I'm only ten. Periods can start at nine though. I'm scared to even go to the bathroom. Also, can your doctor tell if you are going to get your period and when? HELP!

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Scared,
When you first get your period, the flow is usually very light, so even a tissue would probably be enough until you can get a pad. Talk to your mom about your concerns. Tell her what you know—that some girls get their periods at your age or even earlier. Let her know that you'd feel more comfortable if you could carry a mini-pad with you. Based on how you're growing, your doctor will probably have some idea when you're going to get your period, but not exactly when. Your questions are very normal, and you might want to get more information from your school nurse or your doctor.

Liz's Answer
Dear Scared,
Getting your period is an exciting, life changing event. You shouldn't be scared of it. Yes, when you get it for the first time it will be a surprise, but usually when it's your first time it is very light so you don't need to worry about bleeding through your clothes. When you get your period you will know and you can deal with it right away. From then on you will start to carry around pads. You really don't need to stress over it. If you are wondering when you might get your period, your doctor is the perfect person to ask. They can usually predict, based on your growing patterns, around when you will get your period. So, don't worry about it.
