Dear Dr. M and Molly,
I just got glasses. They don't look all that great on me but they are OK. I'm afraid people will make fun of me when I go to school because I've never had glasses before. I don't want to be "The geeky girl with glasses." If they make fun of me what should I do?

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Kristin,
You're at an age when a lot of kids start to wear glasses. It may take a while for you to get used to your new look, but I'm sure you've noticed how much clearer the world is to you. If kids at school make fun of you (and most of them won't), there are several ways to respond. Decide what feels most comfortable. You could try to ignore mean comments since kids who make them will probably give up when they don't get a reaction from you. Or you could just remind kids who make fun of you that seeing the front of the classroom helps you get high grades. Or you could tell them that you don't appreciate being bullied. Also, remember that eyeglasses can be very stylish and fun to wear, so wear them with confidence. I own several pairs and often get compliments on them.

Liz's Answer
Dear Kristin,
You might not think it but your glasses might look really good on you! People probably won't make fun of you but will think it's cool that you got glasses. If they do make fun of you, try not to let it get to you. Laugh along with them or make a joke about your glasses. People may bully you if they know it bothers you. Show them that you don't care what they think and they won't bother you anymore. If the glasses become a real issue, ask your parents if you can get contact lenses when you get older.
