Dear Dr. M and Liz,
I am 10 years old and I still suck my thumb. Every time I go to school, I get embarrassed because some people make fun of me. I try to stop, but it is really hard! Could you tell me some simple ways to stop? THANK YOU!

Dr. M's Answer

Dear Baby Girl,
Thumb sucking is a hard habit for lots of kids to break since it is so comforting. However, there are some really good reasons to try to stop this habit. As you've already found out, other kids will make fun of you if you do this at school. Perhaps you can wear a ring or nail polish on your thumb to help remind you not to put your thumb in your mouth. Also try sucking your thumb only at home, maybe just while watching TV or to help you fall asleep. After a while, try to cut down further until you're no longer sucking your thumb at all. Your dentist can talk to you about the other important reason to break this habit—the appearance of your teeth and your bite are often affected by thumb sucking. Many kids hold a blanket while sucking on their fingers. If you do that, you might want to try just holding the blanket without putting your thumb in your mouth. Think about how proud of yourself you'll be when you've finally kicked this habit.

Dear Baby Girl,
You can use the same special nail polish some people use to help them stop biting their nails to help you stop sucking your thumb. It should work the same way so that every time you suck your thumb you get a bad taste in your mouth that'll remind you not to do it again. Even if it doesn't work, seeing the nail polish should help you remember not to suck your thumb. You may also want to try chewing gum to prevent you from sucking your thumb. Even if you aren't allowed to chew gum in school, you can chew at home. And the less you suck your thumb at home, the easier it will be to stop altogether.
