ALL ABOUT ME – Girl Scout Madison, 10-Year-Old Founder of Fortune Girls™
Interview by Ashlene Nand for Girl Scouts of the USA
Girl Scouts and Fortune Girls are both out to make the world a better place – so we just had to team up and spread the word!
You might have seen the Fortune Girls as part of our new Secure Her Future sweepstakes. Fortune Girls are a series of sassy, fun cartoon characters created by 10-year-old Girl Scout (and entrepreneur) Madison.
Madison is a talented young artist who, with the help of her mother, started her own business called Fortune Girls. Each character is drawn by Madison herself and has a different story to tell!
Fortune Girls are more than art, though. A Fortune Girl looks on the bright side of life and feels good about herself – not because of her body type or clothes – but because she knows that she has the power to make a difference in herself and the world around her.
Starting a business seems like such a hard thing to do (even for grown-ups!) so we asked Madison to answer some of our questions on how she did it.
GSUSA: Before we get into Fortune Girls, you have to tell us what's the best thing about being a Girl Scout for you?
Madison: The community projects and fun activities that I get to do with my friends! And helping people – that's the best thing.
GSUSA: So, how did you get the idea to start Fortune Girls?
Madison: Fortune Girls began when my mom and I were redecorating my room and we needed some cool art. My mom had the idea of taking my drawings, scanning them and drawing over them. We colored them to match my room and framed them. They looked really cool! Other people began asking for my designs and so my mom and I started talking about making it into a company. Fortune Girls was born!
GSUSA: Who helped you to create the business? And how did you know what to do?
Madison: My mom helped in creating the business. She is a design consultant and very creative. We now have a business partner and, between them, they know plenty of people that help us out. We worked together on all parts of the business such as the Web site and the characters. We decided that the Fortune Girls needed to do some good for the community, so we formed the Fortune Girls Ambassadors Club where we do community projects.
GSUSA: Why did you call it Fortune Girls?
Madison: We call it Fortune Girls because Fortune Girls are fortunate and giving back is where it’s at!
GSUSA: What inspires your ideas for Fortune Girls?
Madison: I just draw what I feel or if someone gives me a topic, I can draw around it.
GSUSA: What do you want to be when you grow up?
Madison: A vet or a make-up artist.
GSUSA: How do you juggle school, Fortune Girls, and everything else?
Madison: It's not always easy because I am involved in a lot of activities at school. But working with Fortune Girls is lots of fun so I make the time if we need to get something done.
