Living a Dream - Troop 119

Troop 119

Troop 119, from Quincy, Illinois, planned the adventure of a lifetime – a 12-day hiking trip to the Grand Canyon. The Girls Only Team asked Troop 119 to share their thoughts on their adventure. Here's what they had to say:

In August 2006, we set out on a 12-day adventure that we had been planning since November, 2004. Our goal: "TO HIKE THE GRAND CANYON FROM RIM TO RIM." We also planned to meet with two other Girl Scout troops. We met two Girl Scouts, Janice and Kayla, in Limon, Colorado, where we had a pizza party and played with Kayla's dogs.

Later – in Paxton, Nebraska – we met Troop 217 where we shared dinner and played night tag. Meeting Girl Scouts and trading patches is so much fun! We also:

  • Did a night hike in Arches National Park
  • Rafted on the Colorado River
  • Rode a Hummer across Slippery Rock
  • Viewed petroglyphs in Zion National Park
  • Took a sunrise walk through Bryce Canyon
  • Rode horses in Yellowstone National Park

We made a 16-minute DVD which encourages Girl Scouts to set a goal, work together to achieve that goal and finally to live your dream! Check out our two-minute preview of it!

Mia, 12, discusses planning a trip. "It took about two years to plan for the trip. We had to figure out costs, find the vehicle, get the equipment we would need and make phone calls to other Girl Scout councils to ask for a place to stay. We had to map out the routes. If there was one that went through a National Park, we would take that route."

Nicole, 12, talks about financing a trip. "I sold 200 boxes of cookies for two years. And, for 22 months I cleaned horse stalls, did yard work, cleaned houses and took care of pets. I'm glad I worked to do this trip and the work was fun too."

Valya, 12, comments on the spirit of Girl Scouting. "This trip was a great time for me to spread the joy of scouting. My troop wore matching shirts every day and people noticed our group. I love Girl Scouting, I love helping others, I love exploring new places and just being part of a fun troop."

Audrey, 12, speaks on training to hike across the Grand Canyon. "We started hiking in June by hiking once a week, but then we increased to twice a week because we were going to go down about 16 miles and hike out 9 miles. We needed to be prepared for what was ahead of us, and we needed to be strong to hike it."

Roza, 13, shares the importance of teamwork. "I got a lot of blisters on my feet. But I didn't really care. I'd rather have blisters than not hike this trip because I made a commitment to this team. There was a lot of teamwork in it; helping each other out, helping with packing, just getting ready, sorting and picking out movies."

Katarina, 12, tells of lessons learned. "I felt I grew in my friendship with my troop. I learned how to meet other Girl Scouts across the country. I found inner strength spending 12 days away from my family. I learned that my dreams can come true. If I believe in myself, work toward a dream and save for that dream, it will happen!"
