Field Trip of Dreams
By Lorraine Talmi
Do you love field trips as much as I do? Just take a sneak peek at my diary!
Dear Diary,
I can't wait until Thursday! We're taking our first field trip! We're going to a real farm. I'm so excited to see all of the animals. My teacher promised that some of us are going to get to milk a cow! There are apples and pumpkins to pick and we will learn how they decide what plants to grow—when to plant them and when to harvest them. Mom says there are other lessons to learn from visiting a farm, the business side of it, but I'm not so interested in that kind of stuff.
A Sea-rrific Time
Last year, my class went on three different field trips. We went to the aquarium, where we went behind the scenes and helped the keepers feed the sea lions and the walruses. Some of us got to train the dolphins. My dad said that when he was a boy, he never knew people could work with animals like that or else he might have studied something different and gotten a job at the aquarium.
A Really Big Small World
The science museum was also really cool. There were lots of Dinosaurs—some as tall as the museum! We toured the solar system. It was only a movie, but watching it felt like we were zooming through it for real—just like a ride at Six Flags. Somehow, the stars felt close enough to touch.
Something's Cooking
We also went to a local restaurant to speak with the chef and he let us check out the kitchen. I never saw such a big fridge—we could walk inside it! It was neat to learn about how many other things a chef has to do besides cook. He showed us just what a crazy busy job it is to make dinner for a bunch of different people at a crowded restaurant. I thought it might be a fun career if only I weren't so clumsy. All the knives made me nervous.
Tomorrow I'll tell you about the trip to the farm—I hope I get to milk one of the cows!
